National Trust Papers II review

This is the collection we sell most of, because it is the most liveable.

Burges Snail (£106.20, six colourways: Juniper, Ocean, Lemon, Rosie, Silver, Travertine) comes from Knightshayes Court in Devon, designed by the Gothic Revivalist William Burges — a man who reportedly drew some of his interiors in medieval costume. The paper is on a bathroom wall there, and that is still where it works best: cloakrooms, boot rooms, anywhere that can take a bit of humour. Specification is 52cm wide, a 10.05m roll, 26.5cm pattern repeat, spongeable, and it is a paste-the-wall paper — which is the single biggest reason DIY customers get on with it.

Hencroft (£113.40, eight colourways) is a stitched cowslip pattern found at Wardle's school of embroidery in Leek. Small repeat, no strong direction, forgiving on imperfect walls. If someone tells us "I want wallpaper but I don't want it to shout", this is the book we open.

Clutterbuck (£106.20, five colourways) reads as woven fabric rather than pattern from more than a couple of feet away. Corinthian Gold and Hessian are the two we sell most for hallways.

Pavona (£122.40, eight colourways) is the show-off: peacocks perched on branches, found on a lobby wall at Erddig in Wales and hung in the 1870s, with the painterly finish of Chinese silk. Best in a room you use in the evening.

Archive Trails II review

Archive Trails II is where Little Greene stops doing repeats and starts doing pictures.

Asterid (£252, four colourways: Island, Lantern, Mint, Nightshade) is not taken from a wallpaper at all — it is a reinterpretation of a mid-20th-century illustrative painting, from the era when high society had murals hand-painted. Printed as a three-panel design, it repeats as a floral trail while keeping the loose feel of the original brushwork. It is the most expensive paper on this list and the one people most often photograph in the shop.

Belton Scenic (£252) is a garden-party scene from the Chinese bedroom at Belton House in Lincolnshire, dating from 1785 and hung there in 1840. Little Greene simplified the original — the figures and the odd perspective are gone — to give the bamboo, birds and butterflies room to breathe. It repeats horizontally, so it will run round a room rather than only working as a single panel.

Every design in London Wallpapers V started as a fragment saved from a London building.

• Bedford Square (£91.80, colourways including Acorn, Ebony Gold, Hellebore, Larimar, Porcelain) — from a house on one of London's finest squares, laid out in 1775–6. A late-Victorian/early-Edwardian small pattern, and the best value paper in the range.
• Lower George Street (£91.80, Beryl, Carousel, Comet, Moonstone, Quartz) — light, geometric-leaning, good in a room short of daylight.
• Brook Street c.1895 (£106.20, Elysian, Etruscan, Fedora, Laurel, Palazzo) — classic 1890s florals.
• Brodsworth c.1863 (£122.40, Consort, Empress, Triumph) — birds and florals with raised gilding, made to imitate stamped leather, found at Brodsworth Hall in South Yorkshire and used in the library and morning room in reverse colourways.
• Carlton House Terrace (£122.40, Blue Plume, Copper, Pompon, Slate, Valentine) — a flamboyant peacock feather design found in the attics of 18 Carlton House Terrace, surface-printed to keep the feel of the original.
• Monroe (£113.40, Dawn / Evening / Gold / Night / Pink Flower) — recreated from a small remnant found at Brooke House in Hackney before demolition in the 1950s; Arts & Crafts in spirit, and named after a 19th-century owner who ran the house as a private hospital.
• Lansdowne Walk (£113.40, Ash, Frost, Marigold, Nordic, Pollen) — a Voysey-style Arts & Crafts motif from a nineteenth-century Kensington house.

4. Add one roll. Always. Batches change, and a repair three years later is much easier when there is a spare in the loft.
